Offered here is a hundred-percent handstitched and hand-bound quilt with an abundance of soft cotton weight and a lot of love. The piece is all cotton: thread, strip face, batting, and backing. It was simply lovely to create, and took me many hours. I spent few of those hours (re-)watching a bit of “The Wire”. If you don’t like “The Wire”, I will not allow you to purchase this quilt. Just kidding. But seriously.
Back to the piece. I was inspired to make this by the soft homespun-style plaid shirtings, which can be tricky to work with but are so lovely to feel. Their soft fibers and looser weaves make the quilt instantly feel well-worn and loved, and provide the opportunity for an off-grain interest you won’t find in retail.
Instead of a more typical quilt pattern, I decided to make a straight strip quilt of six fabrics, placed in a non-symmetrical pattern. I finished with a Venetian red backing and a slightly deeper patterned quilter’s-cotton binding. The entire piece was hand-quilted using all-cotton heavy-duty thread in black, white, goldenrod, red, and cranberry.
Each quilting thread was tied and then secured with a soft fabric glue, leaving exposed knots:

A word about care. You notice there is a cat being all shady around the quilt in a few of these pictures. The quilt has since been washed in a mild castille soap, air-dried, and wrapped in acid-free paper. I recommend handwashing and air-drying to retain the soft character of the quilt.
