I first saw a Pikachu hat many, many years ago on a cute young man. I had no idea what I was seeing – although I vaguely sensed it was Japanese or anime in origin – but I loved it. I have spent zero time watching or playing Pokemon – which remains quite popular sixteen years after it’s inception – but as of a few weeks ago, my kids got into it. Big time. Watching Pokemon, playing Pokemon, making up their own cards.
I enjoy working with wool, and I love – love – making garments that distinguish themselves from what you’d find at a retailer. I only make these hats one at a time, and hand-select threads and fabric so you have a completely unique hat – made exactly to your measurements, of course.
Each piece is hand-cut from 100% hand-dyed wool, then machine sewed on my grandmother’s 1950 Singer sewing machine. Each shell construction seam is then handstitched in 100% cotton (either using a ladder stitch or running stitch). The hat is lined in a velour-texture fleece.
A wool shell and a fleece lining means the hat is very warm, yet lightweight. It is water, odor, and stain resistant; and the lining wicks moisture. If you’d like a cooler hat, please let me know via email and I will line with something less warm than fleece.
The wool fabrics were, of course, wonderful to work with. For this project I worked with Erin of Quilting Acres (Etsy link) – who helped me find exactly the right colorway.
Re: sizing. The model in this photo is my daughter; however the hat is mine. I have a 22 1/2″ head and I made the hat at 23 1/2″, the perfect amount of snugness. The fleece lining and wool shell means the hat conforms to YOUR head over just a few wearings. Cozy and durable – like having a head-hug all day long!
As you know I keep no trade secrets. My Flickr tagset details some of my construction techniques. Thank you for supporting homesewn wonderful goods!
