It’s Halloween season, and I’m pleased to say I am getting a bit of custom costume business. These two Minion costumes are heading off to Alberta, Canada tomorrow for a sibling pair.
Their mother also requested I make a couple fabric trick-or-treat bags to match.
Sewing, papercraft, glue gun & hand-stitchery:
One of my favorite details: the stenciled-and-topstitched “Gru” logo:
It wouldn’t be a Kelly Hogaboom project without a little bit of papercraft. Just a little.
More construction details in the Flickr tagset.
Next costume up: a Toro T7 lawn sprinkler for a five year old in Palo Alto, CA!
Your minion costumes are amazeballs; that logo is as perfect as Phoenix’s minion frown. On. the. money. Homesewn costumes are miles apart from store-bought. Stringy wigs and flimsy, slowly unraveling capes, and molded plastic accessories can be a ton of fun in their own right, but it always seems like sending the kids out to trick-or-treat in one of my handmade costumes, something that’s exactly what they envisioned, usually something no one else is wearing, brings so much more joy to the experience for them.
I’m busily costuming away as well. We have a local geekery convention upcoming in the next few weeks and my kids are excited that the cosplay focus is going to be on them this year. The boy is going as an enderman. The stitchery is the easy part on that one. Both of us are getting a lesson in woodwork and electronics as he helps me figure out the stilts and light-up eyes. My little girl is 5 this year, the same age as the character, Mei, in My Neighbor Totoro, and I am getting such a kick out of sewing the little dress and accompanying bloomers.

Thank you for the compliments. I would love to see pictures of your costume when they are finished. My children are going to get a kick out of Enderman.
Growing up, I always thought storebought costumes were kind of fancy. My mom made my costume every year, though. I was always happy with them, and I always felt special that my mom knew how to do that.
These are unbelievable!! Truly, I am in awe. I also had a homesewn costume every year, made by my mother, and I absolutely loved them and wore them all year round. R. is starting to get into the design of his costumes; this year he gave me a sketch. He wants to be a stingray escaping from a fishing net while giving birth.

That costume idea sounds a lot like a specific episode of River Monsters we watched. Or is that just an incredible coincidence?
those are freakin AWESOME!
Um … I am in awe?!
@hsofia
Thank you! You know… a lot of thought and planning goes into these and it is literally one of my favorite things to do! I hope my clients adore them.
