what with all the shenanigans and goings-on

First Night Of Rehearsals

Tonight was Ralph’s first night in rehearsals for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, put on by the Driftwood Players. We found  him a wee floral arrangement and made him a card – with lots of lipsticky glitter, natch.

Silk Jacket For A Client

I sent off a fully-tailored silk coat to a client. I spent about forty hours on this project – a great deal of this in hand-work. It was a real learning experience, and I mean that both in a positive way but also the kind of way where you cry many tears.

More sewing – my first pair of jeans:

I copy-catted these off am RTW pair that fits the owner well, thanks to the Jean-ius class on Craftsy. This was an amazing process! I consider my results successful, too. However, these are only the first pair and I’m going to be distressing them and setting rivets, so what you see here is not the final product.

Some work of Phoenix’s:

She had sketched this lovely little fox, so we sewed it up in faux fur and wool, as part of a birthday gift for a friend.

Wee Finn

Still more sewing! My latest Finn hat – a design I ended up adoring – and a footed pair of PJs. Better pictures soon if I can get my shit together.

My Little Dude. He loved driving so much. But at one point while he was driving the fire truck, I pretended to be run down by him. That made him cry, so I kept further horseplay a decidedly non-matricidal type.

in other news

I’m torn, as I almost make enough side money with my stitchery and graphic design to NOT go to work, for pay, outside the home. While I patiently wait to see if and when I am going to take (other kinds of) work, necessitating less time sewing, I’ve decided to vote my hopes, not my fears, starting with re-opening my Etsy shop. I am currently giving some thought to my stitchery over the next few months. More than anything I enjoy making custom pieces, one at a time, for creative customers. What I am finding is that creative customers are kind of rare!

But in the meantime – BMO! Who I love and who is adorable and tender and sweet and irreverant and reminds me of my Little Guy so much.

Speaking of the LG, this morning when Nels awoke, Phoenix and I treated him to a “spa date” – a many-fluffy-towel’d experience including a hot oil hair treatment, a pedicure, and a nail clipping. All while eating homemade strawberry shortcake, naturally.

Let’s be honest, I am a passionate seamstress but also, well, a passionate seamstress. I get it in my head I want to make something and I will go to (sometimes inappropriate) lengths to get it done. Then? Time to move onto something else. Not much of a mass-producer, here. And truth be told, not an obsessive perfectionist. Just a reasonably competent, high-energy Creative-type.

So anyhoo in honor of the family’s much-enjoyed cartoon caper show, I’m attempting to create the perfect Finn hat! I’ve got some other plans for Finn gear but we’ll see how long my ardor lasts. I’m offering this Finn hat up for super-cheap because I have been seeing all the really sad, ill-fitting and poorly-constructed Finn hats out there, made of pill-y cheap-arse fleece. Which, I mean I’m all for just grabbing a hat, but how about a hat that HUGS you?

Hat: fine fur exterior, 100% cotton knit lining (an upcycled remnant from Grays General Store in Hoquiam!).

I liked the print on the lining fabric, which reminded me of the style of toonery in the show.

Two white snaps so you can wear it under your chin – or just let the straps dangle like you DGAF!

Size: The model has a 21 1/2″ head. If this is going to belong to a smaller head, cool, because hats look okay when they rattle around. But don’t buy the hat if your head is much bigger than that 22″. A tight hat is a total drag, man.
